Hyperventilation syndrome

June 20th, 2010

I visited my friend last night. She is confined at one of the most prestigious hospital in the country. Why is she there? Would you believe that she was just admitted last June 15 for polyps removal.Yes, just a simple Dilation (or dilatation) and curettage (D&C) procedure. Today, she is experiencing hyperventilation syndrome. That is my diagnosis. Am I a doctor now? Thanks to internet. :) Kidding aside, we really do not know what happened. She was even brought to the isolated coronary care unit and she stayed there for two days! What could have happened?

According to what I read, hyperventilation syndrome might be caused by panic attack. Maybe she did panic after waking up and she could not move her legs. The effect of the general anesthesia was still present. Then suddenly she had fever. Then there is the present condition of hyperventilation.

What is hyperventilation syndrome? There is abnormal breathing pattern. We saw that even though she could talk, her chest was going up and down so fast! That could cause decreased carbon dioxide levels that is bad for the body’s organs like the heart.

Right now, all we could do is pray that she gets well soon.
